prerrafaelismo, grupo fundado en oposición a la pintura académica contemporánea. Su período de mayor auge se dio en la década de 1850, con
El regreso de la paloma al arca (1851) y con uno de sus más grandes éxitos públicos,
Joven ciega (1856), una proeza de sentimiento victoriano y destreza técnica. Fue popular como retratista y también como ilustrador de libros, en especial para las novelas de Anthony Trollope.
